In Composer’s words
“A sword-tough warrior with a tender, melodic heart”…“Silence is the loudest music that conquers all other kinds”… These renowned Chinese expressions passed down over centuries reveal a close relationship between martial arts and music in terms of shared philosophical and aesthetic pursuits.
”The Martial Arts Trilogy · Resurrection” represents my attempt to combine the music I composed for three martial arts films into one ”music drama”: Violin Sonata ”Hero”, Cello Sonata ”Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, and Piano Sonata ”The Banquet” are played in sequence, culminating in a Piano, Violin, and Cello Trio ”Resurrection”. In the martial arts films, three heroines give up their love and life for respective causes: Jen Yu in Ang Lee’s “Crouching” for idealistic ambition; Empress Wan in Feng Xiaogang’s ”Banquet” for vengeful desire; Flying Snow in Zhang Yimou’s ”Hero” for patriotic mission. When composing for these three martial arts films, I chose to have the three heroines musically represented by cello (Yo-Yo Ma), piano (Lang Lang), and violin (Itzhak Perlman). Some years down the road, I started to imagine these three heroines, through reincarnation, return to the world to live and love again. Hence I reunited the piano, violin, and cello in “Resurrection”, letting the motifs of these three instruments (three heroines) overlap and expand polyphonically in a trio that travels from antiquity to modern times, reviving the life and love of three fascinating protagonists…
The attempt to compose ”The Martial Arts Trilogy · Resurrection” – the concept of which takes inspiration from Wagner’s Ring Cycle – seems at once coincidental yet inevitable. I am deeply grateful to the three ingenious film directors Ang Lee, Zhang Yimou, and Feng Xiaogang for providing me with artistic inspiration; I also extend my gratitude towards the three maestro music artists Yo-Yo Ma, Lang Lang, and Itzhak Perlman for their dedicated collaboration. Last but not the least, I hope many young musicians and classical music fans can live their “martial arts dream” through ”The Martial Arts Trilogy · Resurrection”. May the work inspire love and compassion in mankind for many generations to come.

Bravery from a Melodic Heart
Speech by Yu Dan
I would like to thank my dear friend Tan Dun for this opportunity to be here and share my thoughts with you on such marvelous music we will be hearing tonight. This music, portraying sword-tough bravery, came from a tender, melodic heart. We Chinese have always considered a melodic heart to be so powerful that it can forge or even smash a sword – a philosophy in connection to our nation’s long rooted fascination with martial arts. Even “literary scholars”, known for juggling words than weapons, were believed to be secretly living out their warrior dreams by producing so many martial arts related literature throughout centuries.
Among the 18 major categories of Chinese martial arts weapons, such as “staff”, “hammer”, “saber”, “spear”, etc., none except for “sword” is affixed with the adjective “precious”. This is because sword is commonly associated with warriors of righteous character. This particular kind of weapon is believed to be forged only by artisans of high integrity, and carries with it justice and responsibility. The films we watched tonight are all works from first-rate Chinese directors. Inside these films, the swords of “Hero”, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, and “The Banquet” were forged respectively by Zhang Yimou, Ang Lee, and Feng Xiaogang. How did the film music composed by Tan Dun, performed by the orchestra tonight, enhance these films? Tan’s music injected life into these swords and made them shine with dignity, glory, pain, agony, loneliness, and hope. These swords shined brightly, because they were forged by a tender, melodic heart. Inside Tan’s outstanding music, we found many western and Chinese instruments in perfect mélange. In “Hero”, the beautiful, elegant violin was accompanied by Chinese guqin in Zen-like harmony, depicting landscape grandeur and warrior heroism. In “Crouching”, the deep, velvety cello was joined by Southern Chinese flutes and Northern Chinese strings in a miraculous blend that shed light on the protagonists’ struggle, frustration, and perseverance. In “Banquet”, the piano theme was enriched with Chinese traditional folk melody, narrating love and melancholy as written in ancient Chinese poems thousands of years ago.
All of us recall that the hero of none of these films ended up winning spectacular victory. Instead, they achieved eternity not for what they gained but for what they gave up. In “Hero”, Nameless let go of the opportunity to kill Emperor Qin, even though the latter had claimed the lives of Sky, Broken, and Snow --- in other words, Nameless gave up personal revenge for altruistic love. In “Crouching”, Li Mu Bai felt no joy but sorrow when he obtained supremacy. He even relinquished the possession of Green Destiny sword, hoping for peace. When Li finally sacrificed his life, he said to his lover Yu Shu Lien that “I could have done this earlier”. Likewise, the young Jen let go of the sword in the end and plunged herself into the deep abyss. With altruistic love, both Li and Jen sacrificed their lives for peace. In “Banquet”, when the Empress, Wu Luan, and Qing Nu died one after another, even the vicious Emperor was willing to drink down the poisoned wine offered by his lover. All have learnt to finally let go.
After all these letting go, what remained for eternity at the end of these sword-themed films? Snow and Broken’s lifelong love and Nameless’ altruistic love in “Hero”, Jen and Lo/Mu Bai and Shu Lien’s love in “Crouching”… As the title of the theme song of “Banquet” suggested, “Repay Your Love With My All” was all that remained meaningful in the end. In “Hero”, Broken and Nameless once discussed about the ascending spiritual levels that a true martial arts warrior needs to experience: level 1 -- sword held in hand and heart; level 2 – sword abandoned but remained in heart; level 3 – sword vanished in both hand and heart. True warriors fight not for personal gain but for world peace. They might die in the process, but their legends pass on for centuries. When we hear about them tonight in this music played out by a tender, melodic heart, we will feel the eternity of altruistic love.
Thank you.

Water Heavens
A stream of water flows into the hall forming a pool. The pool of water is surrounded by the audience and from it emerges the stage of Water Heavens. In this ancient house, a drop of water falls through the oculus from high above and up rises the music dialogue between Zen and Bach. Water Rock and Roll dances with a string quartet and pipa joins together with Buddhist chanting.
In Water Heavens, music can be seen and architecture can be heard. Water Heavens is situated on the riverbank opposite an ancient Buddhist Temple. The world-renowned Japanese architects of Isozaki Studio, in conjunction with composer Tan Dun, designed Water Heavens. The performance hall is two stories high with a uniquely domed roof.
Both the structural pillars and the metal floor can be played as a musical instrument. The center pool can be used not only as a stage, but also as a seating area for the audience. Though the structure contains many unique functions, the architectural appearance still incorporates the ancient style of the water town.
